The communities of Danbury and Bethel are coming together in grief and support following the heartbreaking passing of Matteo Bernabe, a beloved student of Bethel High School. Matteo, just 17 years old and a proud member of the Class of 2026, died on March 17 after a courageous battle with cancer, leaving behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and love.
Matteo was not only known within his school community but also through his family’s local business, Pancho’s Tacos Mexican Restaurant, a place cherished by many residents. The Bernabe family has long been a part of the fabric of the Danbury community, and the loss of their son has been deeply felt by customers, friends, and neighbors alike.
According to a GoFundMe established in his memory, Matteo had been bravely fighting Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer. He was first diagnosed in July 2024 at just 15 years old, when doctors discovered the disease in his femur and lungs. What followed was a long and difficult journey marked by intensive treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. Through it all, Matteo demonstrated remarkable courage and determination.
In mid-2025, Matteo received the hopeful news that he was cancer-free, a moment that brought joy and relief to his family and loved ones. Sadly, that victory was short-lived, as the cancer returned later that year and progressed despite continued efforts to fight it. Even in the face of such devastating news, Matteo remained strong, holding onto hope and continuing to inspire those around him.
Despite the challenges of his illness, Matteo stayed deeply connected to life at Bethel High School. His classmates, teachers, and school administrators rallied around him, ensuring he could still be part of important milestones during his senior year. In a powerful and emotional gesture, Matteo was able to receive his diploma, a testament to his perseverance and the unwavering support of his community.
Services to honor Matteo’s life have been arranged, with visitation held at Cornell Memorial Home and a Mass scheduled at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. These gatherings provide an opportunity for loved ones to come together, share memories, and celebrate the life of a young man who touched so many hearts.
The GoFundMe campaign created in Matteo’s honor continues to receive an outpouring of support, with donations and heartfelt messages reflecting the profound impact he had. Though his life was far too short, Matteo Bernabe will be remembered for his bravery, his kindness, and the strength he showed in the face of unimaginable challenges. His story has united a community in both sorrow and love, ensuring that his memory will never be forgotten.
